Pitch is rise per 12 inches of run. A 6:12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance. Steeper pitch = more actual roof area.
Standard asphalt shingles use 3 bundles per square. Wood shakes use 4 bundles per square (~25 SF each). Always verify with your product label.
Add 10% for simple roofs. Use 15% for hip roofs or those with 1–2 valleys. Complex roofs with multiple dormers and valleys need 20%.
Synthetic underlayment is the current industry standard — lighter, stronger, and can be left exposed longer. 30-lb felt is recommended for steep roofs (7:12+) or when required by code.
Most building codes in cold climates (IECC climate zones 5–8) require ice barrier extending 24″ beyond the interior wall line — typically 3–6 ft of coverage at the eave.

How Roof Shingle Calculations Work
Estimating roofing materials requires four steps: (1) measure the ground-level footprint, (2) apply the pitch multiplier to find actual sloped area, (3) convert to roofing squares (1 square = 100 sq ft) and add waste, then (4) calculate bundles, underlayment rolls, and accessories. Never use footprint area directly — a 6:12 pitched roof has 12% more surface than flat ground.
1 Footprint Area
Measure the roof length and width at ground level (or from a floor plan). Multiply length × width × number of slopes to get the total footprint projected area.
2 Pitch Multiplier
Multiply footprint by the pitch multiplier to get the actual sloped surface area. A 6:12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.118, meaning the roof is 11.8% larger than the footprint.
3 Squares + Waste
Divide actual area by 100 to get roofing squares. Add 10–20% waste for cuts at valleys, hips, and eaves. Round up — shingles are sold by the full bundle.
4 Underlayment Rolls
Divide total roof area by roll coverage. 15-lb felt covers ~400 SF/roll, 30-lb felt ~200 SF/roll, synthetic ~1,000 SF/roll. Always round up and add 10% for overlaps.
Asphalt shingles require a minimum 3:12 pitch. Below 3:12, use a low-slope membrane or built-up roofing. At 3:12 to 4:12, the IRC requires double-layer underlayment. At 4:12 and above, single-layer underlayment is acceptable for most jurisdictions. Ice and water shield is required at eaves in IECC Climate Zones 5–8 (most of the northern U.S.). Always verify with your local building department before purchasing materials.
