How Paint Coverage Is Calculated

The most common mistake DIYers make is using the manufacturer's coverage rate of 400 sq ft per gallon — a number measured under perfect lab conditions on smooth, primed surfaces. In real homes with average wall texture and painted drywall, 300–350 sq ft per gallon is a more accurate estimate. Always add a 10% waste buffer, and plan for 2 coats as the standard.

1 Gross Wall Area

Total wall surface before deductions. Multiply the room perimeter by the ceiling height. For a rectangular room, this is 2×(Length+Width)×Height.

Wall area = 2 × (L + W) × H e.g. 2 × (12+14) × 9 = 468 sq ft

2 Net Paintable Area

Subtract door and window areas you won't paint. Standard U.S. door = 21 sq ft (3×7 ft). Standard window = 15 sq ft (3×5 ft). Then add ceiling if painting it.

Net area = Gross wall area − (doors × 21) − (windows × 15) + ceiling (L × W)

3 Gallons Needed

Divide net area by coverage rate, multiply by number of coats, then add your waste buffer. Always round up to the nearest gallon or quart at the store.

4 Total Cost

Multiply gallons needed (rounded up) by your price per gallon. Budget separately for primer, ceiling paint, and trim — these are often different products.

Pro Tip — Always Buy One Extra Quart

No matter how precise your calculation, keep a spare quart of the exact paint (same batch code if possible) for future touch-ups. Paint color can vary slightly between batches, and touch-ups done months later with a new can rarely match perfectly. Most paint retailers will store your color formula — ask them to print it on the lid.

Primer typically covers 200–300 sq ft per gallon since bare drywall and wood absorb more product. When in doubt, round down your coverage estimate and round up your gallon count at the store.
Two coats is the industry standard for interior walls — it delivers better color uniformity, durability, and washability. One coat may be sufficient if you are painting over a very similar color with a high-quality paint-and-primer product. Painting the ceiling the same color as the walls (called a "color drenched" room) creates a cozy, enveloping effect popular in bedrooms and accent spaces. However, the classic choice is ceiling white — either pure white or a slightly cooler/lighter version of the wall color — which makes rooms feel taller and more open. Regardless of color, always use a flat or matte finish on ceilings. Sheens like eggshell or satin on a ceiling will reflect light at different angles, making surface imperfections like nail pops and tape lines painfully visible.
For L-shaped rooms or open floor plans, break the space into rectangular sections and calculate each separately. Measure the actual perimeter of the room — walk around it and measure each wall segment individually with a tape measure. Add them all up to get total linear feet of wall, then multiply by ceiling height. For rooms with vaulted or cathedral ceilings, measure the actual wall height at each point rather than using a single fixed height — treat each wall as its own rectangle.
