How to Calculate Paver Quantity & Materials

Calculating paver materials involves four steps: (1) find total patio area, (2) determine how many pavers cover one square foot using actual paver size plus joint width, (3) apply a pattern-specific waste factor for edge cuts and breakage, and (4) calculate base materials — gravel, bedding sand, polymeric sand, and edge restraint. Always buy 10–15% more than the raw count. Running out mid-project and needing a new batch risks color variation between production lots.

1 Patio Area

Measure length × width for the total square footage. For L-shaped patios, split into two rectangles and add the areas. Curved edges add complexity and waste — treat as a rectangle and budget 15% extra.

2 Pavers per SF

Divide 144 (sq inches per sq ft) by the paver's coverage area — which includes the paver size plus joint width on each edge. This gives you paver density per square foot.

3 Waste Factor

Pattern determines waste. Straight patterns (running bond, stacked) waste 5–7% from simple edge cuts. Diagonal patterns (herringbone 45°) waste 10–15% because every perimeter paver needs an angled cut.

4 Base Materials

Every paver installation needs: 4–8″ of compacted 3/4-minus gravel, 1″ of coarse bedding sand, polymeric sand for joints, and edge restraint around the perimeter. These are as important as the pavers themselves.

Installation Pro Tips

1. Slope away from structures — minimum 1/8″ per foot (1% grade). Build the slope into the gravel base, not the sand layer.

2. Edge restraint is not optional — install aluminum or plastic paver edging staked every 12 inches before laying a single paver. Without it, edge pavers migrate outward and the whole surface eventually fails.

3. Use coarse bedding sand, not play sand — coarse concrete sand (ASTM C33) compacts properly and drains. Fine play sand shifts under load.

4. Order from the same production lot — paver colors vary between manufacturing runs. Order all pavers at once. If you run short, color may not match. This is why adding 10–15% waste is worth the small extra cost.

5. Compact twice — once before laying pavers (the gravel base) and once after (the finished surface). Final compaction seats pavers and locks joint sand.

Frequently Asked Questions

A 12×12 foot patio is 144 square feet. Using the most common 4×8-inch brick with a 1/8-inch joint (about 4.30 pavers per square foot), you need approximately 619 raw pavers. Add a 7% waste factor for running bond: 619 × 1.07 = 662 pavers total. For a 12×12-inch square slab at about 0.97 pavers per square foot: 144 × 0.97 × 1.05 waste = 147 slabs. Always round up to the nearest full pallet or box quantity offered by your supplier.
Herringbone 45° requires the most pavers due to diagonal cuts at every edge — plan for 15% waste. Nearly every border paver needs an angled cut and the off-cuts are wedge-shaped and can't be reused elsewhere. Stacked bond (grid pattern) requires the least waste — as little as 5% — because cuts are simple straight lines and off-cuts can often fill the next opening in the row. Running bond falls in between at about 7% waste and is the most popular for its balance of good looks, structural strength, and minimal waste.
A 1-inch layer of coarse bedding sand is standard for paver installation. To calculate: (Area in sq ft × 1 inch ÷ 12 inches per foot) ÷ 27 cubic feet per cubic yard = cubic yards needed. For a 192 sq ft patio: (192 × 0.0833) ÷ 27 = 0.59 cubic yards. Always use coarse concrete sand (ASTM C33) — not play sand or mason sand, which compact poorly and cause pavers to shift over time.
Polymeric sand is a blend of fine sand and polymer binders that activates with water to create a firm, flexible joint. Unlike regular sand, polymeric sand resists washing out in rain, deters weed growth, and prevents ant infiltration. One 50-pound bag covers approximately 50–75 square feet depending on joint width and paver size. Reapply every 3–5 years as joints may thin over time. Never apply polymeric sand to wet pavers — it stains permanently.
Yes — edge restraints are not optional. Without them, the outer edge pavers gradually migrate outward as foot traffic pushes them, joints at the edges open up, and eventually interior pavers start shifting too. Install aluminum or high-density polyethylene paver edging along all exposed patio edges before you lay a single paver. Anchor the edging to the compacted gravel base with 10-inch steel spikes every 12 inches. Edges that terminate against a wall, house foundation, or existing concrete do not need additional edge restraint there.
